Action movie maestro Tony Scott reportedly battled inoperable brain cancer before he jumped from a Los Angeles bridge and died Sunday. ABC News reported the diagnosis citing a source close to the famed director of “Top Gun,” “Beverly Hills Cop II,” and “Crimson Tide.” “The autopsy is scheduled for this morning. We might (see a brain issue), but we don’t have anything medically confirmed at this time,” Ed Winter, the assistant chief coroner for Los Angeles County told the Daily News.

Scott, 68, parked his car at the crest of the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning Los Angeles Harbor, about 185 feet above the water, and leaped to his death as witnesses looked on in horror.

Multiple bystanders called 911 around 12:35 p.m., police said. Rescue divers recovered his body from the murky harbor hours later, police said. The British-born director was survived by his third wife, Donna Wilson Scott, and their twin sons. “I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time,” his spokesman Simon Halls said in a statement.

Scott was best known for his blockbuster action movies with strong human dimensions but also worked with famed brother Ridley Scott, director of “Gladiator,” on successful TV projects including the critically acclaimed drama “The Good Wife.” Their company Scott Free Productions produced the recent alien thriller “Prometheus.” – read more

My Little Empire Review

Act of Valour is one of the better action movies you will see this year. The acting is not great, it is a bit wooded. I know they are real Navy seals but the action alone makes up for it. The sound of the bullets is great and the gunboat gun are very loud are they are real bullets. Check out the extra’s on the DVD as some of them are very good (real sub in particular). For all you War Movie fanatics this is a must see.

The below poem is from the movie so i figured it would be nice to include it.

“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and Demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and Its purpose in the service of your people.” – Chief Tecumseh

Amazon Review

Act of Valour aims to capture the experience of Navy SEALs as they combat the schemes of a Chechnyan jihadist who wants to send suicide bombers into American stadiums and shopping malls. Their efforts take them all over the world, from Costa Rica to Somalia to the South Pacific. For added authenticity, eight real Navy SEALs have been cast in the lead roles. In terms of tactics and equipment, Act of Valour is rigorously authentic. What marks this as fantasy is the perfection of the missions (there are no civilian casualties; every sniper takes out his target in a single head shot–there are a lot of exploding heads in this movie) and absolute moral clarity (the wild-eyed jihadist and drug cartel foot soldiers are unquestionably evil; one of the main characters carries his grandfather’s folded flag from World War II).

The performances of the SEALs, though well intentioned, make you appreciate the complexities of Arnold Schwarzenegger. What’s smart about Act of Valour is that it doesn’t waste much time with setups or dialogue, but heads straight into the missions. However, much of these missions are filmed like a first-person-shooter video game, which lends a sense of immediacy but undercuts the sense of reality. Still, all in all, Act of Valour is a sincere attempt to express admiration for the men and women risking their lives in the military. –Bret Fetzer — read original

Over a career that began in the late 1940s he illustrated more than 100 books and wrote more than 20, but it was Where the Wild Things Are, published in 1963, that made his name internationally, selling over 17 million copies.

The book is the tale of a young boy, Max, who sets off on an adventure in his imagination after being sent to his room with no supper. He discovers the Land of the Wild Things where he proves to be the most fearsome of them all, becoming the king of the wild things and enjoying a wild rumpus until, homesick, he returns to his bedroom. The book was made into a live action film in 2009, directed by Spike Jonze from a screenplay by Dave Eggers.

Where the wild things are – Trailer

The wild things of Max’s imagination were based on Sendak’s own relatives. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish Jewish immigrant parents and was aware, in his early teens, of the death of much of his extended family in the Holocaust.

The terrors of his childhood specifically, and childhood more generally, flow through his work. “I refuse to lie to children,” he said in an interview with the Guardian last year. “I refuse to cater to the bullshit of innocence.”

Sendak’s 1970 picture book In the Night Kitchen caused controversy of a different kind, with its depiction of an entirely naked small boy running through a surreal kitchen where he is baking a cake on a dream journey. The book appears frequently on the “most challenged” or “banned” lists compiled by the American Library Association.

endak’s own favourite among his work, Outside Over There, tackles sibling rivalry through the story of Ida, a young girl who resents her baby sister but must then save her when she is kidnapped by mysterious goblins.

Where the Wild Things Are (as read by Christopher Walken)

Sendak also said that the term “children’s illustrator” annoyed him, since it seems to belittle his talent. “I have to accept my role. I will never kill myself like Vincent Van Gogh. Nor will I paint beautiful water lilies like Monet. I can’t do that. I’m in the idiot role of being a kiddie book person,” he said.

However, he was honoured by the children’s books world, winning some of its most prestigious prizes, from the Caldecott medal and the Hans Christian Andersen award to the Astrid Lindgren memorial award.

Sendak lived with his partner, Eugene Glynn, a psychoanalyst, for 50 years until Glynn’s death in May 2007. Sendak described himself as “caved-in with sadness” at the loss but he continued to work, producing Bumble-Ardy, a book featuring a family of pigs last year.

There was good news for the Irish with Terry George’s The Shore securing the best live-action short prize.

Mr George who was raised in Belfast, said: “Our little film was inspired by the people of Northern Ireland, Protestant and Catholic, who, after 30 years of war … proved to the world the Irish are great talkers.”

Hazanavicius’s film won five Oscars in total, as did Martin Scorsese’s Hugo . Jean Dujardin, suave star of the silent flick, just slipped ahead of George Clooney, nominated for The Descendants, in the race for best actor.

The Artist had been a favourite for the best picture award since its triumphant premiere at the Cannes Film Festival a full nine months ago.

The crowd swelled when Meryl Streep walked up to accept the best actress prize for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

“I could hear half of America saying: ‘Oh no, not her again’,” she said. In fact, it has been 30 years since Streep won her last Academy Award.

Octavia Spencer cried spectacularly while accepting the best supporting actress statuette for her turn as a plucky African-American maid in The Help.

Christopher Plummer, at 82, became the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar when he took the best supporting actor award for his role in Beginners . “You’re only two years older than me,” Plummer said to his award. “Where have you been all my life.”

Billy Crystal, returning for his ninth turn as presenter, headed up a reassuringly old-fashioned show.

The routines were hokey. The gags were broad.

One particularly ancient tradition was revived when Woody Allen, victorious in the best original screenplay category, failed to turn up to collect his award. Allen almost always shuns the ceremony. – original article

The Artist , Michel Hazanavicius’s silent black-and- white movie, continued its triumphant parade through awards season by picking up best film, best director and best actor at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (Bafta) last night.

The film completed its tally of seven gongs by grabbing the prizes for original screenplay, costumes, music and cinematography. Asif Kapadia’s Senna , the story of motor racing driver Ayrton Senna, expectedly won best documentary, but slightly dented The Artist ’s evening by taking the best editing statuette.

Meryl Streep won best actress for her turn as Mrs Thatcher in The Iron Lady . Octavia Spencer, sparky as a maid in The Help , was on hand to pick up best supporting actress.

The mighty Christopher Plummer, now a hearty 82, won best supporting actor for his performance as a gay father in Beginners . None of these awards counted as serious surprises. The ceremony, hosted by Stephen Fry, took place in a freezing London, but such luminaries as Brad Pitt, Tom Jones and George Clooney all turned out for the increasingly starry ceremony.

While crossing the red carpet, Clooney commented that the awards, previously a “fun thing”, had become “a much bigger deal in the past 10 years or so”. He’s right. Since the organisers moved the awards to within a few weeks of the Oscars, the Baftas have – not least because the two electorates overlap – proved among the best indicators to the Academy Awards.

Home advantage is, however, still a factor at the Baftas. Viola Davis, nominated for The Help , is the bookies’ pick for the best actress Oscar. Despite being born in New Jersey, Streep counts as an honorary Brit after delivering such a strong performance as Mrs Thatcher, so her win does not alter the reckoning much.

Kerryman Michael Fassbender, not nominated for an Oscar, went home empty-handed after being shortlisted in the Baftas for his turn in Shame .

The near-sweep for The Artist now makes that film odds-on favourite for best film at the awards that really matter.

There was a particularly touching moment when Peter Straughan, winner of the best-adapted screenplay award for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, paid tribute to Bridget O’Connor, his wife and collaborator, who died last year. “She wrote all the good bits and I made the coffee,” he said.

John Hurt was predictably amiable, if rambling, as he accepted a Bafta for “outstanding British contribution”. The academy’s highest award, the Fellowship, was gifted to Martin Scorsese – original article

The artist also picked up the Critics Choice Award earler this week. - click here to read more

The Descendants , starring George Clooney as a man steering his family through a tragic time when his wife is in a coma, won two Golden Globe trophies, including the top honour of best dramatic movie and another for Clooney as best dramatic actor.

Onstage he thanked writer/director Alexander Payne and backstage told reporters: “He knows how to tell stories. He knows how to make something funny and how to turn it around.”

Clooney called the movie “a coming-of-age film for a 50-year-old and a lot of us have dealt with people like that.”

The Artist , a romantic tale about a failing actor who finds love at a time when movies were changing from silents to talkies, picked up three awards including best musical or comedy and best actor in a musical or comedy for its star, French actor Jean Dujardin.

Onstage, Dujardin did the most appropriate thing – gave his speech, thanked his colleagues, then signed off by not saying a word. Moreover, true to stealing almost every scene of his in the movie, little dog Uggie detracted from an emotional speech by the film’s director, Michel Hazanavicius, when the dog begged for a treat.

Other key winners included Meryl Streep for best actress in a film drama with her portrayal of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady . Streep, who is typically reliable with a funny acceptance speech had a difficult time reading hers this year when she forgot her glasses.

Michelle Williams took the trophy for best actress in a comedy or musical with her role as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn .

“I consider myself a mother first and an actress second. The person I most want to thank (is) my daughter, my little girl,” Williams said referring to her child with the late actor Heath Ledger. “I want to say thank you for sending me off to this job everyday with a hug and a kiss.”

Veteran Christopher Plummer (82) won supporting actor with his portrayal of an elderly man who comes out as gay to his family in Beginners , bringing both poignancy and a touch of humor to their lives. Octavia Spencer, playing a beleaguered housemaid in the US South during the civil rights era in The Help was best supporting actress.

Woody Allen was given a Golden Globe for his screenplay for Midnight in Paris and Steven Spielberg won best animated film with his rollicking The Adventures of Tintin .

Iranian film A Separation was named best foreign language film, and its director, Ashgar Farhadi, used the opportunity to tell world audiences: “My people. I think they are a truly peace-loving people.”

The Golden Globe Awards are given out by the roughly 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at what annually is among the key events during Hollywood’s awards season because of the media exposure it brings.

Many of the movies and stars that win here also go on to compete for Oscars later this year, and The Artist , which was the most-nominated film coming into the Golden Globes with six nods overall, will certainly become a frontrunner for the world’s top film honors, as will Descendants and The Help .

Oscar nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will given out on January 24th. - read original article click here

IF TARZAN’S co-star had been human, it’s safe to assume that news of his demise would have been greeted with glowing tributes, a Hollywood funeral and perhaps a retrospective season of his greatest cinematic moments.

As it was, the death of an 80-year-old chimpanzee called Cheetah was announced quietly by the Florida animal sanctuary where he had spent the past five decades in retirement. There was no grand send-off for the venerable Cheetah. Even his role as Johnny Weissmuller’s regular primate sidekick remains shrouded in mystery.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor claims the primate arrived there in 1960 and was donated by Weissmuller’s own estate. He is believed to have been born in 1930 or 1931 and was one of a number of chimpanzees whose owners vied to have recognised as the genuine movie-star Cheeta (with no “h” at the end of its name). The situation is further complicated by the fact that the original star of films such as 1932’s Tarzan the Ape Man and 1934’s Tarzan and His Mate was probably a composite of several animals.

According to the sanctuary, Cheetah was an outgoing chimp who loved humans. Yet like many Hollywood stars, he could also be temperamental. Sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest conceded the animal had a habit of throwing his faeces when discontent.

“When he didn’t like somebody or something that was going on, he would pick up some poop and throw it at them,” Priest said. “He could get you at 30 feet with bars in between.”

One Hollywood star who did mark the potential star’s passing was actor Mia Farrow, whose mother, Maureen O’Sullivan, played Jane in six Tarzan movies. “My mom, who played Jane, invariably referred to Cheetah as ‘that bastard’,” said Farrow.

If he died at 80, Cheetah’s long lifespan would have made him one of the oldest chimpanzees in history. Even in captivity, the animals rarely live past 50.

The character was created especially for the Weissmuller Tarzan films and did not appear in the original books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Another Cheeta, this time with no “h”, was exposed as a fake in 2008 by Washington Post journalist RD Rosen, who had been asked to write a biography of him. In later years, the fake Cheeta had found himself marketed as a painter of “ape-stract art”, with several canvases exhibited at London’s National Gallery.

However, with a little investigation, Rosen discovered that the cigar-smoking, paint-daubing impostor was in fact born in 1960 or 1961 and had never been in a Tarzan film.

Sadly for fans of the Weissmuller-era Tarzan, the animal closest to being the “real” Cheetah was most likely a chimpanzee named Jiggs, who died way back in 1938. – irish times

I am not sure that this list is very good because I kind of like some of the movies on the list. But then some of them are depressing but it kind of depends on the mood you are in.
“Firstly Id like to say that this is kind of a response to so many lists of “most depressing movies” that are filled with romantic comedies and action films that I don’t find at all depressing. Having said that this is not a list of the most unheard of bizarre banned films that make you want to commit suicide, I haven’t been searching up the most messed up and depressing movies there are on the internet to seem like some kind of depressing movie badass who watches movies just to make myself even more sad and depressed.”…read more

Jaws backwards is the story of a giant shark that throws up so many people they have to open up a new beach.

King Kong backwards is the story of a giant gorilla that jumps to the top of the Empire State Building to rescue a woman from an evil gang of planes. He climbs down with her and goes to a theater, where he meets Carl Denham, who takes him back to his tropical home on a hidden island. There, the gorilla resumes his job as Dinosaur Doctor, fixing such ailments as broken necks and lacerated tongues.

The Birds backwards is the story of a quiet seaside village inhabited almost entirely by birds. Humans begin to violently attack the birds for no apparent reason. Determined to drive away the birds, the humans cover themselves in blood and pretend to be injured (we see later that they weren’t really hurt). The birds are so scared they quickly fly away after each encounter. In the end, the birds are forced to abandon their homes. The humans appear to have no regrets about what they’ve done.

Psycho backwards is the story of a young man who magically brings his dead mother back to life. Realizing he could use this power to help others, he resuscitates several people who had tragically died at his hotel and nearby house. One woman is so happy to be brought back to life, she secretly gives thousands of dollars to her worried boss. Her boyfriend is equally happy to see her once again, so they head off to the nearest hotel.

Titanic backwards is the story of an enormous iron ship that surges up from the vast depths of the ocean in order to save a large number of people who are inexplicably, and somewhat foolishly, floundering in the water near an iceberg. It then takes them back to Southampton.

The Lord of the Rings backwards is the story of a mentally challenged Hobbit who overcomes his disability by retrieving his finger — and a golden ring — from the depths of a sinister volcano. As an act of gratitude, he travels the known lands in order to save people’s lives by pulling swords out of their bodies. The Hobbits then spend the rest of their days in the peaceful idylls of the countryside.

The Matrix backwards is the story of a young man who, after a long day of beating people up in videogames, takes a sleeping pill from a black guy in sunglasses so he can wake up in time for his boring office job in the morning.

Around the World in 80 Days backwards is the story of a man who is given a large sum of money and proceeds to go around the world. When he returns to London, he proudly states it can be done and would like to wager money on the expedition.

Night of the Living Dead backwards is the story of a bunch of drunks who blunder around an old house in the countryside. They gradually sober up as morning approaches, kindly replace people’s misplaced internal organs, and carefully sew up the wounds with their mouths.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest backwards is the story of a silent Indian Chief who breaks into an asylum and revives his friend with a magic pillow. After a successful lobotomy reversal, they have a huge party to celebrate. The Indian feels his work is done and doesn’t say anything else. All the patients love the Indian’s friend, even though he slowly destroys their sense of freedom and imagination with increasingly dull stunts. Eventually, he pretends to be cured so he can serve his time in a regular jail.

Sleeping Beauty backwards is the story of a beautiful Princess, who is bored with her opulent lifestyle and husband. She asks her fairy godmothers to send her to sleep for a hundred years in the hope that something better will turn up.
